I’ve often said that i don’t believe in heroes, however i do believe in the ability of people to set a standard or ideal that one aspires to emulate.
When i was young the actions and lifestyles of Millican Dalton and Joe Tasker seeped in to my psyche.
I spent a part of my youth living in Millican’s Cave in Borrowdale. I was also lucky enough, by absolute chance, to meet a relative of Joe Tasker shortly after his death (along with Pete Boardman). From monastery to mountain Joe was an inspiration.
This grant (see linked article) of £40k to preserve his belongings and writings is wonderful news.
The Mountain Heritage Trust is a wonderful organisation preserving as it does the heart beat of mountaineering character, personality and achievement that has eminated from this small island of ours.
