Ordnance Survey have entered the arena of navigation apps with their OS Locate app (available on Apple ios only for the time being).

As well as offering location data and a digital compass, it also, thankfully, includes two well written add ons:

– Help with map reading
(which is probably the best free paper based navigation teaching resource)

and

– Handy tips and safety points
(their attempt at a precis of hillwalking common sense which thankfully includes, reinforces and supports the utility of a map and compass).

The app works on any ios phone that has inbuilt GPS capability.

Reviews of the app are favourable, and for those situations where you need a confirmatory check of your location it’s good.
