(**Gear geek post alert**) The Osprey Mutant 28 litre climbing sack. Not a great design in its own right, more a hybrid of all the design progress by a dozen or so sack companies over the past 5 years, realised in one design. Metal axe keepers via Arc’teryx, and a discreet helmet holder via Blue Ice, and the same rope holder as Macpac use. The clam-shell lid is an ace idea (floppy flappy lid pockets are crap). It’s aimed straight at the climbing community, but the ability to strip some of the features off lends itself to off-piste and other mountain sports too. Personally, i’d have made the hip belt removable. // The funding available to Arc’teryx from their parent company, along with their focus on design, has meant that almost all patented progress in outdoor clothing and equipment in the last 5 years has come from them, however this merging of bright ideas from Osprey is probably the best sub 30 litre sack around just now. I’m keen to see how the fabric copes with abuse. ///
