Lochaber (2)

Yesterday (21st Sept) was a day for grasping opportunities in the weather …

Yesterday A morning bike-ferry-bike-hike from Inchree over to Ardgour. I stopped at the two @commonwealthwargraves plots in Ardgour Church to pay my respects (one of the headstones faces upslope whilst almost every other stone faces the loch ?), and natter to the gardener. I then pedalled past the lochans through new and ancient forests to the Ardgour Mast where the bike was hidden. A stiff hike then upslope alongside the 600ft or so of cascades that make up Tubhallt Mhic ic Eighainn aka the wonderfully named Maclean’s Towel Waterfalls. On and up further and in to Coire Dhuibh. Sunshine to the West. Rain to the East. Bog myrtle underfoot.

On the way back the local policewoman was delivering ‘pepperami and a big chunk of cheddar’ for one of the ferrymen for his lunch from his wife. It’s all go round ‘ere …

As the weather got all a bit agitated in the West i decided to head East and out of it. The National Nature Reserve of Creagh Meagaidh lies almost equidistant between the coasts. It is internationally not only for its nature but for the winter climbing on the NE Face of the mountain known in shorthand as ‘Meggy’. The out and back in to Coire Adair is about 10km and showed Scotland off just donning it’s Autumn jacket. A good stretch of the legs, and a good look at what is perhaps Scotland’s busiest mountain nature reserve.

Chippy tea in Sammy’s in Caol finished the day off. Forty years in the chippy trade this year !!

The weather today is much worse than yesterday ….. perhaps it’s time to come back to the peat bogs and stag ruts of the Peak District …
