Happy 87th …

Happy 87th anniversary to the @ordnancesurvey Trig Point.

Mam Tor trig

The first one was erected on 18-4-36 near Cold Ashby in Northamptonshire. When the mammoth project to install all of the Trig Points in the UK was complete it was possible (in clear weather) to see at least 2 other trig points.

Between 1936 and 1962 around 6500 pillars were built to support the re-mapping of the Nation.

Brigadier Martin Hotine was the person responsible for the design, planning and implemenation of the re-triangulation of GB which supported the re-mapping.

Thorny Gale trig in Cumbria is the last pillar from which re-triangulation measurements were taken on 4-5-62.
