Here we are in the year 2025 with United Utilities funding the ‘secret security task force’ to protect nature with one hand whilst flooding Windermere with human waste with the other hand !! (*is that called brownwashing ?)
At relative scale i don’t think the issues around responsible recreation in the Peak District National Park are any different or less than those in the Lake District, moreover there are two massive conurbations within minutes of the Peak which make the area very easily accessible for hundreds of thousands of people.
What we do have is a reluctance / refusal by the majority of the land owners and land managers here to provide or resource any form of out of hours patrol ranger service howsoever it might be funded.
Continuous defunding of engagement and education will only serve to increase the requirement to change behaviours around irresponsible recreation via law and or the use of force. And ultimately this will cost an awful lot more.
Even if / when the mooted Public Space Protection Order comes in to being here there won’t be the required resources to enforce it.
