Such was my interest in and inspiration from the incredible achievements in these three books that if you passed me the relevant maps i could probably still trace their routes with my finger like i was doing 35+ years ago.
But it was more about the manner of these journeys than the journeys themselves. Quiet, kind, unassuming, humble men undertaking extraordinary feats of endurance.
Then going back to work the next day.
In the days when i was fleet of foot over the fells these three books were my energy gels.
Hugh Symonds passed away on Monday. I’ll raise a dram this evenning.
